It was the end of a particularly brutal day in the waters off the eastern shores of Australia, when a big floating barge sank in shallow waters off Perth.
The accident happened off the north-west coast of the state on Saturday, after a man who was heading from Perth to the nearby town of Prahran, was told to turn back.
The man was trapped in the boat for over a minute before it capsized, according to the Perth Morning Herald newspaper.
“The boat sank,” the newspaper quoted an emergency services spokesman as saying.
A witness told the paper he saw the man “suddenly start to fall down and then get up and swim to shore”.
“I saw him jump and then fall down,” he said.
As the man struggled to swim out of the water, the boat was spotted by police.
“He was still clinging onto the sides of the boat, and the police were trying to get him out,” the police officer told the newspaper.
“It was very chaotic.
He was just floating on the water.”
The witness said the man had been in the water for about 10 minutes before the boat went under.
“The man just was lying on the bottom and I could see the side of his face, and I thought he was dead,” he told the WA Today newspaper.
It’s believed the man’s body has yet to be recovered.
More to come.
