about aluminum foil and the dangers of aluminum lidding article Posted by ian borski on Tuesday, August 11, 2017 10:37:59The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has released a statement in support of a new product that says aluminum foil can be a safe and environmentally friendly material.
Aluminum foil can, in fact, be a highly effective alternative to traditional plastic lids that can contribute to the formation of airborne micro-particles.
The state agency said the Aluminum foil is an efficient and economical alternative to plastic lidding for use in a variety of applications including food storage, packaging, sealants and insulating coatings.
The aluminum foil is safe to use in many applications, but the risk of adverse health effects remains, the statement said.
The DEC said it is encouraging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to review the safety of the aluminum foil as it is currently used.
In addition, the DEC is recommending that aluminum foil be considered a safe alternative to lidding as a means of protecting foodstuffs and packaging materials.
Aluminum foil is also the most commonly used material for sealants.
The agency is encouraging manufacturers to apply for a license from the FDA to use aluminum foil in sealing coatings and other applications.
Alphabox is the brand name for a small aluminum foil roll with a thin surface.
The U.K. government has banned the sale of aluminum foil to anyone under 18 years old because of health risks.
However, it said it will continue to supply the product to some U.N. agencies and organizations, including UNICEF.
